Snowy fun with my favorite canine, Scout, the inspiration for Paws and Reflect

When I adopted my Australian Cattle Dog, I started an Instagram/Facebook blog called Paws and Reflect to document our training journey.

I brought Scout home in January 2019. Within three months our Instagram account had over 1,000 followers, and our Facebook page had over 300 likes. I then decided to build the blog out into its own website in April 2020.

With consistent effort and one “viral” post in November 2019, our audience numbers — and hopefully our positive impact — continue to climb.

“Dear reactive dog owners” organically reached more than 220k people

The goal of Paws and Reflect is simple

It’s my mission to connect openly with other dog lovers. I strive to be fully transparent in sharing my life with Scout — owning a high-energy herding breed isn’t always easy, and I want other owners to know they aren’t alone.

I post almost every day, writing about things like training methods, relationship building, and dog psychology. From analyzing Skinner’s four quadrants of operant conditioning to simply documenting our daily successes and struggles, Paws and Reflect is a little bit of everything.

It’s the most fulfilling of my side projects

I’m extremely passionate about responsible dog ownership, and I love learning from a diverse online community of canine enthusiasts. On days that I feel overwhelmed, Paws and Reflect gives me the opportunity to look back at my progress with Scout — and get support from friends who understand.

Having the opportunity to educate, encourage, and learn from fellow dog lovers is what really keeps me going.

When owners message me to say that they did something new with their dog because of my blog, my spirit soars every time.

Scout and I believe in small, incremental change

I know that making a difference in the world is tough, but I firmly believe Paws and Reflect is planting the seeds to create change every day.

If I can help one owner feel more understood or one dog enjoy a more fulfilling life, that’s enough for me! Plus it’s darn fun for me and Scout. 😉
